He was engaged in the drug business for five years, and editted the Western Gazette, and was afterward editor of the Cedar Rapids Daily Republican for two years. In 1873 he bought an interest in the Marshal County Republican paper and moved to Marshalltown. He held the office of Chairman of the Republican State Central Committee in 1873.
Abraham then sold out again and moved to David City, Nebraska where his brother-in-law had located. He bought a large tract of land and went into the business of raising sheep. He then moved to Omaha, Nebraska and worked in Real Estate. His first wife had died some years before this, so he married a second wife there. From there he moved to Los Angeles, California.
