2195. Herman Witmer GRAYBILL

Herman founded a coal and lumber business in East Petersburg, Penn. He was a member of the East Hempfield twp. School Board for 25 years, served four terms as Director of the Poor for Lancaster Co., and served in the army during the Civil War.

When Daniel Graybill, father of Amos, died in 1890, Amos was already deceased.
He had been a farmer in Nebraska, but the location of his family was unknown

David Graybill owned a leaf tobacco and mercantile business in East
Petersburg, Penn., and was a Justice of the Peace for many years. David served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for six terms. Some of this information came from "Biographical Annals of Lancaster Co.", p. 801

In his early life John Whitmer was a teacher, but after he moved to Ohio in
1842 he began a mercantile business at Pleasant Hill and continued in this
occupation for the rest of his life. He served Miami Co., Ohio, as a Justice
of the Peace.

John and Elizabeth had one child. He also had 9 more children with his second
wife, Sarah.

2203. Michael WHITMER

When his father died Michael went to work as a blacksmith for Hugh Knox. In
1836 he went to Indiana where he took out a patent (Land Pattents, Wells Co.
Courthouse, Bluffton, Indiana) for 160 acres of land in Lancaster Twp., Wells
Co. He returned home, married a daughter of his employer and moved with her to
Indiana. All of their children were born there. After the Civil War the
entire family moved to a farm in Burr Oak Twp., St. Joseph Co., Michigan.
After his wife died, Michael made his home with his son Will, at first on the
old family farm, but after 1901 in the village of Burr Oak. It is also
believed that Michael and his family spent some time in Illinois.

2206. Abraham WITMER

In 1841 Abraham Whitmer was living in Fayette Twp., Juniata Co., Pennsylvania,
but in 1842 he moved to Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio, where he bought eight
acres and with others laid out the town of Pleasant Hill. He set up a
blacksmith shop and later started a grocery and dry goods store. In 1857 he
traded the store for a farm in Newton Twp., on which he lived until 1863 when
he sold the land and purchased a farm in Loromie Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio.

Daniel and Catharine Rohrer were listed in the 1850 census of Chapman Twp.,
Juniata Co., Pennsylvania. He was a clerk. In 1880 Catharine and her four
children were in the Chapman Twp. census.
