roof of a house striking him unconscious, from which he succumbed on the third
day after this.

2175. Benjamin WITMER
In 1843 Dr. John Witmer sold 87 acres from the original Witmer farm to his son
Benjamin. When Benjamin died the land was sold to Jacob K. Brubaker in 1850
(Will U-1-663, Lancaster). At that time the executors of the estate purchased a
house and four acres in East Hempfield Twp. in trust for the use of the widow
and children of Benjamin. In 1856 Anna Witmer married Christian Keller and was
living with him in 1860 in East Hempfield twp. By 1870 Anna Keller was a widow
living in East Hempfield Twp. with two widowed daughters.
2176. Maria WITMER
Maria's husband Jacob Hostetter was an innkeeper in East Hempfield Twp. in a
house owned by her father, Dr. John Witmer. The inn was sold to Daniel Hessin
1843, but Jacob was still called an innkeeper in 1850. In 1860 and 1870 he was
called a farmer. In her husband's will, it was ordered that his real and
personal property were to be used for the support of Mary for her lifetime.

5584. Amos W. HOSTETTER
1860 Carroll Co., Illinois Census. In the 1860 census, Amos is living with his uncle Abraham.
Amos was working with his Uncle Abraham in the bank as a cashier and Bookkeeper. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the 34th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, becoming Captain of Company I. He was killed while reconnoitering on the picket line before Atlanta, Georgia.
