253. Barbara HERSHEY
Will of Father, John Hershey
Barbara and her husband, Jacob Miller, moved to New York and then to Ontario,
Canada. They lived along the Niagara River near Chippewa in Willoughby
Township. Today this is call "Century Farms"Barbara and Jacob had five children.
Barbara is listed in her husband, Jacob's will. Barbara actually dies before Jacob but the will was made when they were both alive.
Jacob was a United Brethren while living in Pennsylvania but formed a "little communal society which he called 'mennonite.' A German Bible now in possession of a descendant was printed in 1776 and it shows it was purchased by Jacob Miller in Maryland in 1787. In 1804 he and his family became pioneers on the River Road seven miles south of Niagara Falls, and bought a farm of several hundred acres along Niagara River near Chippewa in Willoughby Township, Welland County, Ontario, Canada. This lay two miles above Niagara Falls and eighteen miles below Fort Erie. To this he added two farms east of the Grand River in Waterloo County.
He was a minister of the Mennonite Church. Whether his ordination took place before or after his immigration to Canada has not been verified. He had a family of five children, two of whom lived on the Waterloo property. It is said that he made frequent trips on horseback to preach in Waterloo County.Jacob's will was made on April 20, 1832 and was registered on September 25, 1841 shortly after his death by his son David.
