Joseph served in the Civil War for the South as a major and quartermaster. Joseph lived in Missouri at this time. He was captured in the battle of Vicksburg by his brother Thomas's outfit. Joseph was paroled and served the balance of the war as a Southern major and quartermaster in charge of transportation for paroled prisoners and freed slaves. He was bonded and handled very large sums issued to him by the Northern army quartermaster but always as a paroled prisoner of war. He was stationed at Mobile Alabama when the war ended and remained there.
